Full title: Look Mummy, there's an aeroplane up in the sky.

I wanted a really moody effect for this painting, and the red sort of reflects ideas of death and blood. I started out drawing the planes in kiddie-style, but they ended up sort of surreal and bomb-like, and really menacing (which is good!). Also, I made the barrage balloons look sort of friendly because they're protection. And the shed-thing is supposed to be shelter that the frightened mother is trying to drag the child to. The whole idea is that the child doesn't really understand about the war. The gas-masks add to the scaryness... they look blank and frightened at the same time, as if whatever's happening is too terrible to scream at.

Inspired by "Goodbye Blue Sky" (Track 7), The Wall, by Pink Floyd. Lyrics:

Did you see the frightened ones?
Did you hear the falling bombs?
Did you ever wonder why we had to run for shelter
When the promise of a brave new world
Unfurled beneath a clear blue sky?

Did you see the frightened ones?
Did you hear the falling bombs?
The flames are all long-gone,
But the pain lingers on.

Goodbye Blue Sky
Goodbye Blue Sky
Goodbye.

:D thankyou... I just immediately resubmitted it as a smaller file... i realised that all you could get on the large view was the canvas detail! ~Desi

Great pic!
I thought the girl was facing into the distance, but upon close inspection she's facing out. I love the people's golden outline from the flames, makes them look really close to some huge fire!
The absolute best bit for me though it the wall on the left, it so reminds me of a gaping wound oozing blood.

:D thanks... it was originally a yellow outline, but that was before I added red into the sky from the direction of the planes, so I added the red to make them look like they "fit" into the sky. It never even crossed my mind about the wall oozing blood... just shows that sometimes you do things that you don't even realise you do... :)

Okay this is awsome....i love how you are looking though a crumbled wall and the concept that the child doesnt seem to understand the war the door they are headed too seems like a light is behind it i dunno guess that you could relate it to "a light at the end of the tunnel" phrase. Its true are in envokes feeling...and i love it... its a very good depiction if you ask me. I love the fire red and golden yell sky and the silouets of the buildings .. Very very good :-)
